Public Transit Driver

Job Responsibilities

Summary:

The Public Transit Driver is responsible for safely transporting passengers along assigned routes in compliance with FTA/DOT regulations. This role requires a valid Class C CDL with a Passenger Endorsement and includes daily vehicle inspections, assisting passengers—particularly those with disabilities—and maintaining vehicle cleanliness. The driver will operate communication devices, secure wheelchairs and packages, collect fares, and complete required documentation and reports. Ongoing training in ADA compliance and wheelchair securement is mandatory. Strong customer service and safety awareness are essential. Will have to pass a pre-employment drug test.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Drives vehicle to destination according to assigned schedule.
  • Picks up passengers in response to radio or telephone relayed requests for service, or by the sign-in sheet for county trips.
  • Assists disabled passengers into and out of the vehicle.
  • Assists clients with packages if needed.
  • Secures passengers’ wheelchairs with restraining devices to stabilize wheelchairs during a trip. And secure packages.  
  • Operates radio or similar device to communicate with base station or other vehicles to report disruption of service or to get passenger updates.
  • Cleans windows, sweeps the vehicle, and fuels assigned transit vehicle daily.
  • Collects revenue based on the fare of each route driven and safeguards it.
  • Keeps records of trips and behavior of passengers.
  • Will report promptly any accidents or incidents in writing on the form provided.  Keep the bus clear of all unnecessary objects – trash, bottles, etc.
  • Submit timely and accurate reports to the main office by the time requested.
  • Reports by radio or telephone to Transportation staff on completion of trip.
  • Participate in cross-training initiatives for various roles to promote a well-rounded understanding of departmental functions. 

Requirements

Education and/or Experience:

Prefer three (3) years of related driving experience.  Must have a CDL license with a P endorsement and must have a clean driving record.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current CDL Class C driver license with a P endorsement.  CPR certified.  Will be required to attend other training as assigned. (First Aid, Defensive Driving, Emergency Evacuations, etc.).

 

Other Qualifications:

Will be considered safety sensitive under the drug testing rules of FTA.  Will have a physical as required by DOT.  Must pass a pre-employment drug test.  Will be subject to  FTA Drug and Alcohol testing rules.  Will be subject to random and other drug testing. Will perform maintenance checks with written documentation daily.

Monday – Friday 7:30AM – 3:30PM
