Nutrition Specialist

Job Responsibilities

Summary:  

Responsible for preparing nutritious, CACFP-compliant meals in a safe, sanitary, and nurturing environment. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Meal Preparation & Service:
      • Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and snack according to pre-planned menus and USDA/CACFP guidelines.
      • Modify recipes to accommodate children with documented food allergies or special dietary needs.
      • Ensure meals are served on time and at the correct temperatures. 
      • Works with the classroom teachers to provide items for cooking/tasting experiences.
      • Prepares snacks/food for monthly parent meetings.
  • Health & Safety:
      • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the kitchen, including appliances, utensils, and food storage areas.
      • Follow all local, state, and federal health department regulations.
      • Wears a hairnet and gloves at all times while preparing and plating food. Ensures anyone entering the kitchen washes their hands and puts on a hair net.
      • Maintain accurate records of food temperatures, refrigerator/freezer logs, and dishwashing sanitization levels.
      • Ensure the kitchen, the food carts, and the classrooms have food allergies and special dietary needs posted.
      • Wears backbrace while unpacking/unloading and putting groceries away.
  • Inventory& Ordering:
      • Monitor food supplies and submit orders for grocery trucks and/or shop for groceries after an approved requisition.
      • Practice FIFO (First in, First out) for food storage to minimize waste.
      • Maintain organized storage of dry goods, refrigerated items, and frozen foods.
      • Maintains an accurate inventory of all food and supplies purchased.
  • Compliance & Documentation:
    • Complete daily production records and attendance counts required for CACFP reimbursement.
    • Submits CACFP required documentation to the Nutrition Manager weekly.
    • Submits all receipts and temperature logs to the Nutrition Manager at the end of each month.
    • Receives the initial ServSafe certification and maintains the certification throughout employment.
    • Participate in required Head Start training and professional development.

Requirements

  • Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent. Relevant experience preferred.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of an organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Computes accurate numerical reports such as in-kind, mileage forms, and timesheets.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills & Technology: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be willing to advance computer skills as needed for the job. Must be able to successfully operate IPads, Cell Phones, Video Monitoring systems, etc.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current driver’s license, First Aid and CPR certification, Health Assessment including Tuberculosis screening.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Excellent supervision skills.  Skilled at communicating and working with adults and young children
  • Other Qualifications: Must be able to attend evening classes, or meetings. Must be able to travel out of town to attend meetings or training that involves overnight stay up to one week if necessary. Must be able to work flexible hours and/or overtime if necessary for after-school programs and parent meetings as needed.
  • Training & Safety Culture: Flexibility to attend evening greetings or training as needed; willingness to travel for training and conferences. Attend necessary training to assure program compliance. Assure documentation collected is accurate to determine client eligibility for all programs such as Home Energy Assistance. Completion of all required training is mandatory. Employees must consistently adhere to and support the organization’s culture of safety by following safety policies, participating in safety-related training, and contributing to a safe work environment.
